The Witham Hub has teamed up with the Dance Network Association (DNA) to provide weekly ‘Dancing with Dementia’ classes, which are held in The Hub on Friday afternoons at 2.30pm.
To make this possible, the DNA has received generous grants from Fowler Smith & Jones, Fusion Leisure Centre, the Health and Wellbeing Panel via Braintree District Council and Witham Central Councillor, Toby Williams as part of the Braintree District Councillors Community Grants scheme. The Hub is providing a warm and safe environment to offer the Dancing with Dementia programme for those living with Dementia and their loved ones between September 2023 – March 2024.
The new funds and support received from local partners have allowed the DNA to offer these classes at The Hub, on a weekly basis, through the winter months; which is when research shows that people become more isolated, having a detrimental effect on their health and wellbeing. They provide fun, physical activity in the right environment to encourage people to stay connected with their neighbours and to keep their bodies and minds moving.
The major benefit of attending the classes is that they help to ensure the least possible deterioration in health. Class activities include a combination of seated and standing movement exercises that are specifically created for those living with Dementia to encourage them to dance. These activities are also designed to encourage participants to dance with their companions or carers.
They experience a ‘party like’ atmosphere with a range of colourful props to enhance their experience and give added visual interest, along with lively music that gets everyone up, moving and singing along! All sessions conclude with refreshments and a social element, enabling opportunities for new friendships to develop.
Tina Townsend, Chair of The Witham Hub’s Trustees said: “We are delighted to have been able to provide the facilities for the Dancing with Dementia classes to take place in Witham. Being able to support and help improve the lives of people going through their Dementia journey and their families means a great deal to us. This is a cause very close to our hearts.”

Please note: On the success of this amazing group we have launched a weekly group ‘Time for Tea’ that will be held Wednesdays from 2.30 – 4.00pm, for those living with Dementia. It is an opportunity to join others on their journey, to chat and share experiences over a cuppa and a cake.
The cost is just £2.00 and includes unlimited refills and a cake!
